North Carolina State University's Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences (FBNS) ranks among the top food science departments in the country. This recognition is the result of excellence achieved in all areas of the university's mission: teaching, research, and extension.
Over the years FBNS has made significant contributions to the state and nation's food processing industries. In North Carolina food processing has grown, diversified, and become a vital economic force by providing jobs and adding value to raw agricultural commodities. A recent survey of North Carolina food processors revealed that all segments of the industry expect to expand and also anticipates an increasing need for technical assistance. As always, FBNS Extension faculty and professional staff will play a significant role in providing this assistance through educational programs and applied research.
In addition to assisting the North Carolina food processing industry, FBNS Extension educational programs include food entrepreneurial assistance, retail food safety, and training assistance to other agencies. Extension faculty also mentor students and provide assistance with internships and in job placement.
